Abstract

18,695. Stocker, W. W. Sept. 15. Balls.-The inner cores of golf balls and the elastic strips which are wound under tension around such cores are formed of a combination of a soft resilient material such as india-rubber and a hard resilient material such as gutta-percha. The core is formed of two or more disks a, Figs. 3 and 8, of india-rubber, which are formed with slots c so that the disks can be fitted together ; or the disks a are moulded to take the form of disks intersecting equatorially. The core is built up to the form of a complete sphere by means of spherical sections b of gutta-percha &c. This core can be wound under tension with rubber strips &c., and finished in the usual way, or may be wound under tension with a rubber strip d, Fig. 4, with which are incorporated a number of disks or strips e of guttapercha &c., the strip d being threaded through slots f in the disks e. To facilitate attaching the disks e to the strip, they may be formed with a slit connecting the two slots f, or the slots f may be continued in one direction to the edge of the disk, and disks with only one of such slots may be used. The strip d and disks e may be wound on an ordinary core, and in all cases the ball is covered in the usual way.
