Candles.-Hydroxystearic acid in a proportion varying from 15 to 25 per cent of the total mass, is used as a stiffening-agent in the manufacture of a composite candle. In order that the hydroxystearic acid may be uniformly distributed throughout the candle, a small quantity of a solvent for the acid is also added. Stearic acid, cerotic acid, benzoic acid, palmitic acid, crude tallow, and elaine stock are suitable for this purpose.
