Advertising; displaying. - Advertisements or the like are displayed on rotatable carriers behind openings preferably one e above and one below a clock, which controls clock-work or electric means for changing the advertisements and opening and closing shutters to expose and cover the advertisements periodically. The chiming of the clock each quarterhour is arranged to take place just t before or while the advertisements are exposed. In the apparatus shown, the axle of the minute-hand of the clock 5 carries a disk 17 with four pairs of pins 18 which in turn engage and depress a lever 19, thus through levers 20, 22 lifting a lever 23 so as to bring a pin 25 on that lever out of engagement with another pin 26 on the fly 28 of the spring motor 24. When this happens, the spring motor rotates the gear-wheels on the axes 29, 32, 27<*>; a cam on the axis 32, engaging a piece 35 on the lever 23, then keeps the lever 23 raised while the pinion 37 rotates a crank 38 through half a revolution, thus operating a rod 39 and, through a lever 40, rocking shaft 41, lever 43, and chain or the like 44, raising the shutter 12, and at the same time, through shaft 41, levers 45, 46, 47, rocking shaft 48, lever 49, and chain or the like 50, raising the shutter 13, thus displaying two advertisements on the plates 1 through openings 10, 11. During this time, the motor 24 has rotated the wheel 36 one-sixteenth of a revolution, thus bringing pins 51 nearly into engagement with levers 52, 53. The motor 24 is then stopped by the pin 25 on the lever 23 until the lever 19 is again operated, when the crank 31 is again given a half-revolution, thus allowing the shutters 12, 13 to fall by gravity. At the same time, the rotation of the wheel 36 causes one pin 51 to lift the end of the lever 52 free from a slot in a disk 55 and another pin 51 to engage the lever 53, which drives the disk 55 and therefore the carrier 3 by means of one of the pins on the disk, thus changing the advertisements on both carriers, the upper one 2 being connected with the lower one by cranks 8 and rods 9. Electric lights may be employed within the apparatus, and the current may be regulated by the motion of the shutters. The Provisional Specification states that folding doors or bands with openings alternating with solid parts may be used, that the doors or shutters may be normally held closed by springs or weights, and that the bands may receive from the clock mechanism a continuous or alternating motion ; also that the advertisements may be carried on endless bands passing over rollers, that the movements of the doors, shutters, or the like may be effected from the clock mechanism by any suitable means, such as mechanical gear, or electro-magnetic devices energized and de-energized by means of circuits made and broken by the clock-work at the requisite times.
