Abstract

15,937. North, J. T. Aug. 3. Thermometers.-A maximum and minimum registering - thermometer is constructed with a column of creosote or similar liquid c (shown in dotted lines): interposed between the mercury b and an air-filled space d. On a rise of temperature, the maximum index e is moved by the mercury column, the minimum index e<1> being unaffected ; while on a fall of temperature the minimum index e<1> follows the rear of the creosote column, the maximum index being unaffected. To prevent the mercury in the bulb from being accidently displaced, a contraction a<3> is formed in the bore near the bulb, while an expansion a<4> is formed to facilitate the introduction of the mercury during manufacture.
