Starting and stopping; brakes.- The apparatus for screwing up nuts or bolts, driving screws, &c. described in Specification No. 3258, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Metals, Cutting &c.], is improved by the addition of a yielding shaft coupling to prevent over-driving, combined with means for stopping the motor, which may be a steamengine. The flexible shaft c, Fig. 2, and the chuck c* carrying the bit or tool are connected to the sockets c<1>, c<2>, which are capable of rotation, but are held against' longitudinal movement in the casing d by studs d<1>, d' engaging annular grooves. In each of the.sockets c<1>, c<2> is mounted one end of the spting c<5>, forming a coupling which yields when the nut &c. is screwed home and the tool encounters greater resistance. The sleeve e has a quick screw-thread e' engaging a similar thread on the socket c<1>, and longitudinal grooves e<2> engaging feathers on the socket c<2>, so that, when the spring yields, the sleeve e moves towards the left, and engaging the inclined surface f<2*> of the block f<2> raises the barf, disconnecting the contactpieces f<3>, f<4> and breaking the circuit of the electromotor by which the apparatus is driven. When the coupling yields, the sleeve e bears against one arm of a bell-crank lever, the other arm of which is fixed to a wire in the flexible tube i'. The wire is fixed to the lever i, which operates the throttle valve of the engine and through the medium of the link i<2> and lever i<5> raises the detent i<5*>, whereupon the brake bands j is applied to the drum j<1> by the spring j<6>. The slot i<2*> in the link i<2> prevents the brake from being automatically applied until the throttle valve is nearly closed. In a modification, the sleeve e, Fig. 2, closes the circuit of an electro - magnet, the armature of which operates the throttle valve.
