Abstract
11,040. Fuller, D. May 26. Dry batteries.-A metallic, celluloid, or like capsule 7, situated in the top of a dry cell, contains a charge of liquid, which sets the cell in action when the top and base of the capsule are punctured by a sharp instrument. The capsule may have a central opening, formed by a metallic tube 8, to allow the connexion 9 to pass to the top of the cell. The outers zinc casing, covered or not externally with paper, contains an inner perforated zinc cylinder 2. The usual depolarizer 4 is contained in a porous envelope 3, say of paper, and the closure 5 may slope towards the sides of the cell to direct the liquid against the zincs. In another form, the zinc 2 is dispensed with, a layer of white paste, such as flour, filling the space between the envelope 3 and the outer zinc casing ; or ribs may be provided on the outer zinc or upon the envelope 3 in place of the paste or perforated part 2. The Provisional Specification states that a cover is placed above the capsule, a hole being provided for the insertion of the instrument to pierce the capsule. A projection on the capsule parses through the cover and receives a screw nut for holding the capsule in place. Instead of being pierced, the capsule may be opened by providing it with screw caps or plugs.
