Abstract
8200. Lake, M. H., [Tesla, N.]. April 17. Signals, electric.-Consists in a method of transmitting energy by establishing stationary electrical waves in the earth. Electrical oscillations are produced in a conductor connected to earth and the oscillations are taken up by the earth and reflected, so producing stationary waves through the e a r t h having the usual characteristics of nodes and ventral segments. Receiving-apparatus placed in certain positions are acted upon by the waves, o r the wave lengths may be so adjusted as a to affect apparatus in fixed positions. Waves of different lengths may be produced simultaneously, so producing a slowly-moving resultant wave, or several sets of such waves may be produced, so establishing regions of definite activity. The waves may be varied in intensity so as to produce different effects, and may be used for signalling &c., determining the course of moving objects such as ships, indicating time and distance apart of objects, latitude and longitude, &c. The oscillations impressed on the earth have a frequency of from six to 20,000 per second, and the wave train should continue for not less than one - twelfth of a second. The apparatus for producing the oscillations may consist of a transformer A with its secondary C connected in series with the primary or otherwise to an elevated terminal D and to earth at E, as.described in Specification No. 20,981, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Electricity, Regulating &c.]. The total length of conductor E D should be a quarter of the wave length of the electrical disturbance in the system E C D, or an odd multiple of that. One form of receiver is described in Specification No. 11,293, A.D. 1901, and is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of a cylinder C<2> of insulating-material rotated by clockwork or the like and carrying contacts S engaging with contact-fingers b, b<1> connected to a condenser C, an indicator R, and adjustable commutator d. The contacts S also engage contacts a connected to terminal plates P, P<1>, one of which may be in the ground and one in the air,-or both may be in the ground at a considerable distance apart. When a number of stations are at work, the arrangement described in Specification No. 14,579, A.D. 1901, may be employed to prevent interference. For receiving energy in appreciable amount, a transformer similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and described in the prior Specifications may be employed.
