Abstract

8010. Nicholson, J. H. April 25, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Rolling; welding.-Composite tubes are made by welding a pierced billet to a thin tube of nickel or other metal and then reducing the section by rolling, drawing, &c. The interior surface of the heated billet is cleaned to remove scale &c., and a tapering plug is driven into the tube, which is inserted in the billet, to open its ends and to prevent the gases from coming in contact with the welding surfaces. The welding may be effected by inclined rolls 3, 4, Fig. 1, a mandrel 2 serving to compress the tube at the point a and so effect the weld. The welded blank is then reduced in diameter by rolls 6, 7, Fig. 2, or other means. The nickel or other tube may be welded to the outside of the billet if an exterior lining is required.
