Abstract

7239. Zipkes, S. April 5. Floors; ceilings; beams; bridges; concrete buildings.- In ferro-concrete structures, the tensile stresses are transmitted to the material in compression so as to increase the compressive stresses by iron bars, wire ropes, or the like looped as shown at b in Fig. 1, the straight parts lying in the tension zones. Several parallel bars or wires are connected transversely within the loops to form beam skeletons. Between the beams are bars d connected by transverse looped wires. Fig. 7 shows the skeleton for a beam with fixed ends. To reduce the weight, the material within the loops may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 8. Shoulders may be formed on the sides of the beams, as shown in Fig. 10, and wires g may be inserted parallel to the loops. Fig. 12 shows a hollow floor and ceiling, and Fig. 14 shows a bridge in which the pier and girder reinforcements are connected.
