Abstract

5969. Thompson, W. P., [Johnson, W. S.]. March 21. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to vehicles propelled and steered by a fore-carriage carrying the motor and driving-gear and connected to the body of the vehicle by a turntable or fifth wheel, the fore-carriage being locked to the vehicle when the hand steering-lever is in its central position, and adjusted for steering by moving the lever to either side, so as to release the locking-device and retard either of the wheels by applying a brake. Fig. 1 shows a perspective view and Fig. 2 a plan of an aarangement in which the motor drives the divided live axle directly. The turntable D, having its periphery seated in the guide-ring E, which is bolted to the floor of the vehicle body, carries the motor &c. on its underside, and is supported from the axle G through springs. The guide-ring E is furnished with a depending flange a, against which bear the clamping-shoes q of the frictional looking- device, which is operated, by the linkwork shown, from a crank l formed on the vertical steering- shaft T. The axle G is formed in two parts, which are connected and driven by the differential gear M, either part being retarded, as required for steering purposes, by the application of the corresponding band brake P or R, the brake bands being connected by slotted links h, i and pins to a cross-bar U fixed to the lower end of the steering- shaft T, so that only one brake can be applied at any time. Fig. 5 shows a plan of an alternative arrangement in which an intermediate differential shaft is employed. The motor drives the differential gear M through gearing, and the two parts l<1>, m<1> of the differential shaft drive the road wheels through toothed gearing j<1>, k<1>, the wheels being mounted loosely on the fixed axle G'. The retarding-brakes f<1>, h are connected directly with the wheels, and applied through the linkwork shown from a crank on the vertical steering-shaft T which engages the slotted links y<1>, z<1>.
