Abstract

5880. Rankin, E. M. March 20. Crossings ; guard-rails.-At a crossing, the rolling surface of the wheels is changed from the tread to the flange, the object being to obviate knocking as a train passes a crossing. The Figures show a crossing at right-angles, but the invention is also applicable to crossings at acute angles. Between the main rails A and guard-rails C are bolted the bars B, the ends D of which are tapered to enable the flanges of the wheels to roll on to the level central portion, and lift the tread of the wheel out of contact with the ordinary rails. In the case of a square crossing, the bars B are formed in one piece, and the Provisional Specification states that the inner guard-rails may be formed of a square frame of iron or steel with small rounded corners.
