Brushes and brush-holders.-The tubular brush arm a is provided with a spring or spring-pressed rod or plunger b bearing upon a split cam d secured to the rocker spindle by means of a screw h. When the plunger bears upon the corner of the cam, the arm a is forced downwards to press the brush e upon the commutator, but, on the arm a being moved so that the plunger bears upon the curved part of the cam, the brush-holder is forced away from the commutator, thereby facilitating inspection or renewal of the brush. Movement in the two directions is limited by means of stops t, u formed on the cam which engage with the plunger b and the part a' of the arm respectively. The brush arm a is provided on opposite sides with plates f, Fig. 4, which are bored to fit upon the locker spindle or other part, and a screwed plug g serves both as a means of adjusting the spring and as a guide for the plunger. The brush arm and cam may be electrically connected by a flexible metallic cord v secured by screws x, w. The brush, which is of the concentrically-curved pattern, may be mounted in the jaws k, l, the latter of which is adjusted by means of a screw n. Springs acting in tension may be used instead of springs in compression.
