Abstract

4692. Barlow, H. B., [Foster Engineering Co.]. March 7. Pressure - regulating valves.-In the steam or other fluid-pressure regulator shown in Fig. 1, the main valve 6 is controlled partly by the high-pressure fluid, acting through the high-pressure port 20 and the ports 48 on the piston 10, which is attached to the valvespindle, and partly by the low-pressure fluid acting through the port 45 on a diaphragm 30. The high-pressure control fluid first passes into a chamber 19, access to which is controlled by an auxiliary valve 22, pressed towards its seat 21 by a spring 42, and away from its seat by a screwcontrolled spring 32. In the event of the outlet pressure at 3 exceeding that required, the pressure will raise the diaphragm 30 and permit the spring 42 to raise the auxiliary valve 22 and close the high-pressure port 20, thereby cutting off the admission of high-pressure fluid to the piston chamber 9. The pressure in the chamber 9 will then be equalized with that at the out'et 3 by leakage round the piston 10 and the stem 26, the main valve 6 being then raised, to throttle the outflow, by means of the spring 14 and by the fluid entering at 2. As soon as the outlet pressure is reducod, as required, the spring 32 opens the valve 22, permitting access of high-pressure fluid to the piston chamber 9 to open the valve 6 again. The maximum opening is regulated by a screw 16. The outlet pressure is regulated by a screw 34 enclosed in a cap which is locked in position by means of a bifurcated lug engaging a lug 38 on the valvecasing to prevent tampering. To enable the valve to be controlled by fluid pressure at some distant point, or by the outlet of a pump, a tapped connexion is made with the diaphragm pressurechamber 29 ; in this case, the port 45 is closed by means of the screw 46. In the event of the diaphragm breaking, it may be replaced, without the flow being stopped, by slightly opening the needle' valve 44, to admit high-pressure fluid to the chamber 19 although the valve 22 would be closed, and closing the valve 46. A ground shoulder 28 acting against the underface of the cap 27 prevents the escape of fluid about the. stein 26 while the diaphragm is being repaired. Lift valves.-The main lift valve 6, Fig. 3, may be fitted with a removable disk 49 secured by a screw collar 50. The auxiliary valve 22, Fig. 1, may also have a removable disk 23.
