Abstract

4517. Hay, W. G. March 4. Driving - gear; valve - gear. - Relates to mechanism for transforming the reciprocating motion of a pistonrod into rotary motion by means of gripping shoes or clutches engaging toothed or friction wheels; means are also described whereby the effect of the gripping-devices may be reversed in direction. The invention is shown applied to a steam-propelled road wagon. The driven shaft 1 is tubular and in two portions, arranged upon an axle 2, and each portion of the shaft is driven through springs by a toothed wheel 4. Two shoes 7 are arranged on each toothed wheel, and are connected in pairs by the rods 12 to the cross-head of the engine. Each shoe is formed in halves bolted together, and spring- pressed pawls 8 are mounted in the shoe, adapted to engage the teeth of the wheels 4. The pawls are arranged in two groups, one for forward and the other fur reverse driving, the change being effected by sliding the piece 19, thereby turning the pawls on their pivots. The sliding piece 19 is operated by a bell-crank 20, which is in turn operated by another bell-crank 21, the longer arm of which engages a collar sliding on the shaft 1. The slide valve of the engine is operated by the cross-head through a lever 45. The engine is suspended from the wagon frame by links. In a modification, a roller-clutch arrangement is substituted for the pawls and toothed wheels. The rim of the wheel is cylindrical, the rollers being located in shoes with eccentric recesses. The rollers are kept in working position by spring-pressed levers, and reversal is effected by a sliding piece, fitting between the rollers, and operated by bell-cranks as before. In another modification, shown in Fig. 7, the engine drives a pair of rack-bars 35, 36, gearing with a pair of wheels arranged side by side and carrying pawls 31, 32. The pawls engage teeth on an inner wheel, in which are mounted two small bevel pinions engaging bevel wheels fixed to the two portions of the shaft 1, the whole forming a differential driving-gear. Rollers or cams may be substituted for the pawls, and reversal may be effected as before. Each pair of gripping-shoes or each rack may be operated by a separate engine or cylinder.
