2753. Vorster, B. C. A. Feb. 10. Cutting-machines for postage and like stamps.- Consists of details described, but not claimed, in Specification No. 18,900, A.D. 1904. The stamp strip wound upon the reel 1 is pressed between the drum 3 and roller 4 by the spring 35, and passes thence under a guide-opening 39, until the perforated dividing-line between the first two stamps rests over a sharp edge flush with the top of a frame 21, the lower end of which slides up and down on a water trough 19. This frame is mounted on two guide-rods, on which are helical springs tending to press it upwards, and level with its upper edge are the upper ends of three wicks forming a damping-pad 17. Between the wicks are placed two thin piates 42, serving as a support to the end stamp. The stamp-affixing instrument, shown in Fig. 4, is introduced into the guideopening, and the handle 53 is pressed downwards against the action of the spring 25, when the end stamp is removed by the shearing action of the sharp edge, and penetrated by the pins 28, and, in the lowest position of the frame 21, Fig. 2, its adhesive underside is damped by the pad 17. Simultaneously, the slotted lever 37 is operated by the pin 38 attached to the frame, moving the lever 9, pivoted to the axle of the drum 3, against the action of the spring 10, thus removing the driving-pawl 8 from the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 7. On removing the stamp-affixing instrument with the stamp attached, the frame 21 moves upward under the action of its springs, a spring stud 12 is forced out of a recess 11 in the drum, and the latter is rotated by the pawl 8, owing to the return of the lever 9, until the stud springs into the next recess, such rotation serving to feed on the next stamp into the required position. To ensure uniform rotation of the drum, it is geared with a pin 51, on the axis of which is a fly-wheel 52.
