Abstract

875. Michell, A. G. M. Jan. 16. Thrust bearings; step and vertical-shaft bearings; lubricating.-A thrust or end-pressure bearing is provided with a number of segmental blocks pivoted to either the moving or the fixed part. Fig. 2 shows the application to a horizontal thrust bearing. A collar on the shaft A bears against the blocks C<1>, pivoted to the ring D<1> in the bearing-case, by pins c' parsing through grooves in projections d<1> on the blocks. Each block c<1> is pivoted somewhat to the rear of its centre, so that it is slightly tilted, facilitating the entrance of lubricant contained in the bearing-case. Similar bearing-blocks may be placed on both sides of the collar on the shaft to take thrust in both directions. Pins fixed in the casing may engage extensions on some of the pins c<1>, to prevent the blocks from turning with the shaft. Fig. 6 shows the application to a footstep-bearing. The blocks c<3> are pivoted to the ring D<3> keyed to the shaft A, and engage the fixed step B', resting on the spherical seat H and prevented from turning by pins G<1>. The extension a on the shaft enters a central bole in the step B'. Fig. 7 shows a modification used with high speeds. A floating ring K, carrying blocks C<4>, C<5> in pairs, is placed between the cullar on the shaft and the fixed bearing-ring. Each pair is pivoted on the pin c<4>, and may be further connected by loosely-fitted screws k. Fig. 8 shows a modification adapted for rotation in both directions. Pairs of blocks C<6>, C<7> are pivoted by pins c<6> to pillow-blocks M, each of which has a channel m on its other side to receive a ball N resting in a corresponding channel in the fixed bearing-ring. With this arrangement the series of blocks C<6> or C<7> take the load according to the direction of rotation. The arrangement shown in Fig. 7 is modified for rotation in either direction by pivoting the blocks C<8>, C<9>, Fig. 11, on the same side of the pin c<4>. The line ring K will rotate with the shaft, or remain fixed, according to the direction of rotation.
