Abstract

28,920. List, W., and Ritchie, F. Dec. 30. Signals, automatic-alarm.-Consists of a thermostatic device in which the unequal expansion of two metals causes an electric circuit to be made or broken when a lamp goes out, and is especially applicable to motor car lamps. The signal may be a lamp, bell, or indicator, and in the case of the motor car the ignition circuit may be broken so that the car comes to a stop, on the extinction of the lamp. Fig. 4 is a front view of the apparatus as attached to a lamp. The frame alpha has at one end a contact-chamber b shown in section in Fig. 1, and at the other two nuts c. Attached to it at d is a compound bar e, composed of two metals, the lower of which expands more than the upper, so that, when the bar is heated from below by the flame, the contact f is raised. When the lamp is extinguished, the contact f falls and makes contact with the contact-screw g. This screw g can be adjusted so as to regulate the period of time in which the contacts open or close.
