28,375. Zingel, G. M. Dec. 27. Secondary batteries. - Consists of a battery of bipolar plates and two end - plates, the latter alone having connections extending outside the cell. Each bipolar plate consists of a sheet A, Fig. 1, of insulating- material with a frame A' on each side for supporting the active material B. At the middle of the top edge of each frame A' is a box A<3> on each side, and a conductor C passes up one box, through a slot in the insulating-plate A, and down the other box, the slot and the top of the boxes being sealed with paraffin wax D. The ends of the conductor C are divided into strips C', Fig. 3, which are embedded in the pasted active material B, or else covered with it when the plates are "formed" on the PlantÚ system. When the plates are immersed, the air contained in the boxes A<3>, Fig. 2, prevents access of the electrolyte to the exposed part of the connection C. Inclined pins A<2>, integral with the plate A, may help to support the paste B, which may be stamped with conical or other apertures B' to facilitate expansion and the disengagement of gas bubbles. The plate A may be integral with the separating-frames or cell walls A<4>.
