Dyeing.-Blended shades, varying from light to dark or from one colour to another, are obtained upon fabrics, warps, &c. by spraying them by means of a rotating brush or brushes, which touch a widely-meshed sieve or a bar or a set of parallel bars, and whereof various parts are supplied with dye solutions of different compositions. The dyes are fed from troughs e, f by cylinders c, d, consisting of a number of small cylinders c<1>, c<2>, c<3> revolving in separate compartments e', e<2>, e<3> of the troughs, the small cylinders on one shaft alternating with those on the other so that the whole surface of the distributing- cylinder b is supplied and the brush cylinder a is properly fed. The wire bristles of the brush cylinder a strike a stretched wide-mesh wire screen h and so spray the fabric k, preferably travelling more slowly than the circumference of the brush cylinder. Various effects are produced by modifying the method of working, the dye solutions, &c. The apparatus may be modified by using only one colour cylinder, the small cylinders being close together and the distributing-cylinder covered with some material such as felt. The distributing- cylinder may be dispensed with, and the colour cylinders may also be omitted if, for instance, the brush cylinder revolves against strips of felt or cloth which siphon the dye from troughs or upon which the dye drops from vessels.
