Abstract

27,858. Kling, P. M. Dec. 20. Brakes.-In a brake for tramcars or the like, means are provided for rapidly taking up the slack of the brake chain, and a spare chain is fitted which comes into use if the main chain breaks. The main chain 21, Fig. 2, is connected to a spindle 14, on which is fixed a conical barrel 16, Fig. 3. This barrel is connected by a cable 9 to a similar, but inverted, barrel 8 on an auxiliary spindle 3, to which is connected the spare chain 19, Fig. 2. The spindle 3 is also connected by its square upper end, and by a sleeve 10, to the handle shaft or to steam, electric, or other actuating-gear, and it is fitted with a ratchet-wheel 6 engaging the usual pivoted dog. A spring 18 is connected to the spindle 14 for effecting the return motion. The spindle 3 drives the spindle 14 by means of the cable 9 first at an increased speed and then at a reduced speed. The cable 9 is adjustably connected to the barrel 8 so that the position of the brake blocks when "off " can be varied when required. The gear is enclosed in a box 2 above the platform 1. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, the spindles 3,14 are connected by spur gearing 22, and the main chain winds on to a fuzee 24.
