Abstract

26,466. Watkins, W. Dec. 5, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Rail joints.-Fishplates and bolts are dispensed with at rail joints by constructing a chair 1 from a sheet-metal blank, with upwardly-bent portions 5 to embrace the rails and downwardly-bent portions 6 to embrace a saddle-plate 1 placed across the sleepers. The portions 6 rest on each side of the sleeper under the joint. To give extra bearing to the rails, an extra saddle-plate 14 is preferably placed on the plate 1 beyond the ends of the chair plate 8. The portions 6 may be bent upwards and the portions 5 downwards. The upwardly-bent portions, which are provided with notches to receive spikes, may be extended to embrace the rail web and to act as fishplates.
