Abstract
25,943. Butterfield, J. B. Nov. 29. Cooling plug cocks.-In the multiple-way plug cock shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the temperature of the cock is regulated and equalized by meansof anannular jacket chamber S which is supplied with the fluid from one of the inlets 0. The fluid enters the jacket S through the ports V, U in the plug and casing. Other inlets P, Q, say, are isolated from the chamber S by rings T around the inlets. In operation, for example, if the inlet 0 admits cold water, the chamber S, when this inlet is first used, will be filled and remain full of cold water ; if, then, the plug is turned to admit steam through the inlet P or Q, the cold water isolated in the jacket chamber S will prevent the casing from becoming suddenly overheated, and will obviate a sudden or unequal expansion or contraction. The plug has a tapered shoulder N retained in a correspondingly-shaped part of the casing by a spring W in a recess supported adjustably by a rod 1, as shown. The spindle H<1> passes out, through a stuffing-box, which is fitted with a gland J having a projection or flange J<1>, the gland being pressed down upon the packing by a cap K screwing on the outside of the box.
