Abstract

25,855. Brookes, A. G., [Gregory, G. W.]. Nov. 28. Liquid levels, indicating. -A float-controlled gauge, applicable to tanks, boilers, or vessels f o r holding gasoline, oil, water, or other liquid, comprises a shaft mounted vertically inside a spirally slotted tube and a hollow metal float sliding on the shaft and engaging the slot. The indicator consists of a compass needle controlled by a permanent magnet fixed to the top of the shaft. The shaft h is of ribbon form, and the float m is fitted with a correspondingly - shaped central tube as well as with a guiding-pin n. In the construction shown, the slotted tube e is attached to a head d which is secured by a curb b and way c and is locked by a screw v. The compass box is adjustably secured over the magnet l by a flanged nut s. The glass cover q is held tightly by a snap-ring r and serves to keep the needle on its pivot. A stop 1 is fitted to engage the float before the guiding-pin reaches the end of the slot. If gasoline is to be stored under pressure, the stop is placed some distance below the top of the tank. Holes x are formed in the tube and in the stop 1 to permit the passage of the liquid from the filling-opening t, and a vent passage y is furnished with a screw stopper z. Where a separate filling-opening is provided, the tube e may be attached directly by a curb and way and the compass box fitted directly over the end of the tube. In a modified construction, the compass box is hinged to close over a central filling-opening and secured by a catch. The magnet is U-shaped, the ends projecting upwards into a groove round the central opening. The shaft is cranked and is supported at the top by a bearing in a narrow cross-bar. The guiding-pin is formed with a hole to engage the crank shaft.
