Spindle apparatus.-The spindles of spinning and twisting machines, and of machines in which spinning and coiling in a box are effected simultaneously, are driven by toothed wheels B gearing with helical teeth or a worm a. The spindles are self-balancing, and are supported by bushes D, D' and a bolster C mounted in spherical bearings so as to allow of slight oscillation. The bearings consists of a partly-spherical annular projection c on the bolster working in a similarly-formed socket, the upper surface of which is formed by the end of a tube F yieldingly pressed downwards by an adjustable spring G. The bolster C is prevented from rotating by a pin which is fixed to the gear casing E, and pins d<2> secure the bushes D, D<2> to the bolster. The lower part of the gear case E and the part e<3> serve as oil reservoirs, the lubricant being distributed by grooves a<2>, d. The helical teeth a may be made long, and, when the upper part is worn, the lower part may be brought into gear on raising the spindle by means of a screw H. The worm may be mounted on a shaft or continuation of the spindle, the bolster of which is mounted in a bearing which will allow of a slight oscillation to take place during rotation.
