24,852. King, G. I. June 9, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Carriages with end entrances; bodies; underframing of bodies; doors, carriage ; platforms, communication; window f r a m i n g.-The body is built up of steelchannel and like beams and plates, and is lined with wood, and the roof consists of wood sheathing attached to arched carlines. Fig. 4 shows the general arrangement at one end of the car, which consists of an underframe 1 carrying side posts 9 attached to the side-plates 6, 6, and to the facia plates 10. A door 28 leads to the platform 38 of the vestibule, and a door 27 leads into the car. The centre sill 1 of the underframing consists of two channels with cover - plates 2, 3, and extends from end to end of the car, or is interrupted at the bolster 5, Figs. 4 and 5, which, if made as shown, in two side-pieces, is attached to a filler block 4 containing the king-bolt bearing. The platform ends of the centre and side silts are covered by a plate 2, which is also riveted to the end sill 18, Fig. 4, and is connected to the side and end plates 6, Fig. 5, by angles 2, or by its flanged edges. The top and bottom edges of the plates 6 may be formed with tension and compression flanges, but these are preferably formed by angle-irons 7, 14. At each end of the car is a vertical plate 6, Fig. 4, which is provided with an elliptical window, and, at one end, serves as a side wall for the lavatory. The facias 10 carry the Z-beams 11, Fig. 7, supporting the roof carlines 12, to which they are connected by gusset plates 13, or by flat continuous plates. In a modification, the roof carlines are supported by angle-irons 11, Fig. 24, and bent channelbeams 11. The roof timbers rest on furring- strips 12, Fig. 7, beneath which are placed a finishing-moulding 12 and a strip 12<c> serving as a window hood. A sheet-metal roof may be attached to the sheathing-boards 12<d>. The floor 16, Fig. 13, is carried by nailing-strips 16, which are attached to cross-beams 16 secured by angleirons 17 to the sides 6. Beneath the floor is a deafening-ceiling 15, which is attached to nailing- strips 15 in the angle-irons 14. The door 27, Fig. 16, is placed between two posts 25, which, like the corner posts 19, consist of bent channel-beams and are filled in with wood for the attachment of the body lining. The ends of the flanges of the corner posts 19 are cut away to facilitate their attachment to the corner bends of the end sill 18 of the underframing. The end-plates 22, hetween the posts 19, 25, are reinforced by angle-irons 23. In the modification shown in Fig. 17, the corner post 19 and the door post 25 consist of Z-beams, which are filled up as shown. The door posts are connected by an arched cast lintel 29, Fig. 18, to which, and to the end-plates, is connected the endplate 30. The hood carlines 34 are attached to brace plates 35 connected by angle-irons 36 to the plate 30, and are attached to the bowed angle-iron 33 riveted to the Z-bar 11. The platform 38, Fig. 4, is supported by beams 39 which are attached to the longitudinal sills, and carry a platform end sill 40. The side posts 9, Fig. 10, have bolted to them nailing-strips 41, to which are attached the panels 42 between the windows 43. The window frames are also attached to the posts 9, and the windows rest on sills 44 attached to the compression flanges 7 of the side-plates 6.
