Moulding biscuits. - A single machine is constructed to perform the operations of a drop machine, a wire-cutting machine, a rout press or forcing machine, and a biscuit-cutting machine. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation. The dough or mixture fed into the hopper 2 is forced downwards by the fluted rollers 3, 4, and through a removable die-plate which is bolted in a slide at the bottom. When making rout biscuits, a die-plate is used having apertures suitable for producing continuous ribbons which pass on to the travelling web 52, are carried over the cutting-table 71, and are cut to the required lengths by a knife carried by the crosshead 46. The cut pieces pass over the panning-knife 59, and leave the web as they reach the pans 45, which are carried on endless chains 61 actuated by ratchet-wheels 60 and pawls 64 on rocking levers 65 operated by rods 66, the pans being given a forward motion simultaneously with the movement of the web. A die-plate may be used having a long narrow slot suitable for the production of a sheet of dough, which is cut into rectangular biscuits. When making drop biscuits, a die-plate having drop pipes is used, and a claw clutch connecting the driving-mechanism to the eccentric 47 is put out of action, so that the pawl and ratchet mechanism 54 for operating the web 52 remains idle, the web roller 58 is removed, the web is drawn out of the way, and the panning- knife 59 is lifted. The levers 23, 25 are then screwed together by the hand-wheel screw 28, bringing the cam roller 24 into contact with the cam 20, which raises the table 18, by means of the rocking lever 21, when the pan 45 receives the drop of dough, and lowers it afterwards so that the dough breaks cleanly. When making wire-cut biscuits, the die-plate used is of the form shown in Fig. 8, the cutter mechanism 46 is put out of gear, and the levers 23, 25 are disconnected, and the link 29 is fitted to the open end of the crank 30, so that the lever 31 is rocked and actuates the sliding frame carrying the cutting-wires 41. After cutting off the biscuit a, the wire 41 drops for the return movement, as indicated in the lower portion of Fig. 8, this motion being effected by causing the guide-pin 37, Fig. 1, to move forward along the upper guide groove 36, and back along the lower one, finally rising along the incline beneath the pivoted tongue 38.
