Abstract

21,661. Uthemann, F. Oct. 10, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Corrosion, preventing.- Copper is protected from corrosion by sea-water by the application of a more electropositive metal, such as iron, to the surface, in the form of a perforated sheet, or a wire netting or spiral. Electrolytic action results in the dissolving of the iron and in the deposition of a protective coating of iron oxide upon the copper. In the case of copper tubes used for carrying sea-water, a steel or iron helix f is compressed and allowed to expand into the tube d, ensuring a good contact so that the water cannot displace the helix.
