Abstract

21,656. Prudon, E. Oct. 8, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Folding cycles ; clamps ; frames ; forks ; handlebars ; pedals ; " steering-mechanism. - Cycles are constructed so that they may be folded in small compass for carrying upon motor cars or other vehicles for use in case of breakdown of such vehicles. The four arms A, B, C, D are brazed to the segments b, Fig. 4, which are mounted on a hollow sleeve c. The arms are kept in the requisite distended position by ferrules screwed on the sleeve c. The lips of the ferrule are bevelled and grip firmly the knurled edges of the segments. The frame is strengthened by the wire stays h, q, o secured to studs. The forks E, Fig. 5, of the bicycle terminate in the spindle G, which rotates between ball bearings i, g. The steering-wires hare fastened to the studs ion the forks, and also to eye-bolts fixed on either side of the handle-bars. Any motion of the handle-bars is thus transmitted to the steering-wheel F. The saddle bracket I, Fig. 10, is pivoted at l, and on its rotation to its normal position the stay wire o attached to the stud n is tightened. The pedals, Fig. 16, are pivoted at u, and may be turned inwards by raising the flat spring v which bears against a nose x. The frame may be folded up by loosening the ferrules which hold the segment b in position.
