Abstract

21,047. Darzens, G. Nov. 28, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Aldehydes; oxyacids. - Substituted oxyacrylic acids of the general formula are produced by condensing ketones with glycollic acid or its ethers, such as the ethyl ester of a monohalogen derivative of acetic acid, in the presence of sodium, sodium ethylate, or other condensing-agent. The esters so produced are saponified, and the acids obtained are decomposed by heating or distilling in vacuo, or in any other suitable manner so as to form substituted acetic aldehydes. In examples, ethyl chloracetate is condensed by means of sodium in absolute alcohol with methyl-nonyl-ketone, p-tolyl-methyl-ketone, and benzylacetone. The condensation products, when saponified and decomposed, yield, respectively, methyl-nonyl-acetaldehyde, p-methyl-hydratropic aldehyde, and methyl-phenylbutyl aldehyde. These aldehydes yield semi-carbazones.
