Abstract

19,541. Dixon, J., and Dixon, T. O. Sept. 10. Towing.-Consists in means for guiding boats or barges being towed on inland waterways, comprising a groove or rails on the canal bank, in which runs a guide-roller attached to an arm on the vessel. Fig. 3 shows a plan of one arrangement. The booms d, secured to the posts e on the vessel C, carry wheels b working in or on a groove or rail a on the towing-path. The connection between the arm and wheels allows universal movement. The booms d are stayed by grips g, and may be adjustable in length. Fig. 7 shows a plan of a modification, the booms d being mounted upon separate pontoons C<1>, which are placed between the barges. The groove or rail a is used to guide an electric or other locomotive h, the wheels i on one side engaging the groove or rail. The wheels j on the other side may be either of the ordinary road traction or of flanged type. A trolley wire k may be supported over the towing-path in the usual manner. The vessels Care attached to the locomotive by a rope p.
