Liquid-fuel fittings.- Carbonaceous liquids such as the residuum of petroleum and like liquids are converted into a highly combustible gas in an apparatus consisting of two chambers a, b separated by asbestos or other insulating-material e. Steam supplied by a perforated pipe k<3> is superheated to prevent condensation within the chamber a and to raise the carbonaceous liquid, injected under pressure through a nozzle h, to a temperature of 300‹ F. The mixture entering the perforated lower end of the tube d issues, under the control of a check valve d<2>, through a lateral orifice d<1> into a chamber or retort b, which is maintained at a temperature of about 800‹ F. to complete the gasefication before the mixture escapes from the nozzle c<1>. One method of maintaining the retort b at 800‹ F. is by reflected heat, the retort being adjustably arranged in the furnace so that the gas from the nozzle c<1> plays upon a brick pier or its equivalent. The relative proportions of steam and oil supplied to the chamber a are varied to suit the class of furnace with which the apparatus is employed.
