Abstract

18,204. British Thomson-Kouston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Aug. 22. Electric locomotives and motor vehicles. - An electric transformer of special construction and suitable for fixing under an electric car. A car 1, Fig. 1, has trolley poles 2 to take alternating current from the line-wire 3, the circuit being completed through the primary of the transformer, wheels 6, and rails. The transformer is supported beneath the car by a frame of wrought-iron bars 42, Fig. 6, connected at their upper ends by rails 43. Conduits 48, Fig. 1, are located between the floor beams of the car, and are connected by removable sections 49 to openings 46, Fig. 6, in the end-plates 20 of the transformer. A hood 52, Fig. 1, is fixed at each end of the conduit 48, and is covered by a screen to prevent the entrance of dirt. Traps 54, Fig. 4, may also be provided. As the car moves, air is drawn in through the conduit, and passes through the transformer core, thereby keeping it cool. Fig. 9 shows the intake pipe 56 of the air compressor 57 connected to the transformer plates 55 by connections 55'. The compressor 57 fills the reservoir 58 with air for the operation of the car brakes. This arrangement allows for cooling the core at low speed, as the brakes are then used more.
