Abstract

17,255. Epshtine, J. Aug. 8. Carpets; rugs; chenille. - Old or waste carpet is cut into strips about half an inch wide parallel to one set of threads. Two or three threads are then unravelled from each edge by the aid of a sharp tool, so that threads project on each side as shown in Fig. 2. These strips are then twisted to give the chenille - like appearance shown in Fig. 3, an excessive twist being put in to counteract the usual untwisting on release from the machine &c. In some cases, the twisting may be omitted. The cords or strips are then used as weft and woven into a rug or carpet in a hand loom using cotton yarn, preferably twine, warp. The strips near the edge of the carpet &c. are usually long enough to be turned back to produce a finished selvage.
