Abstract

17,027. Stern, H. Aug. 3. Counting-apparatus.-Rotary liquid meters are provided with counting and cost-indicating apparatus, in which rotating discs carry the numbers under perforations in the cover-plate. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show a meter in which the water passes through the strainer 13 and rotates a vane wheel b, which through toothed gearing actuates a toothed wheel m carrying a tappet n. This tappet moves a wheel o mounted on a spindle p, upon which is also fixed a wheel q having one tooth only, and also the units disc j. The wheel q at every revolution turns the wheel r to the extent of one tooth. The spindle s of the wheel r also carries a single-tooth wheel and the tens disc j<1>. Similarly, the hundreds disc is operated. To indicate the cost, a second series of discs 3, 7 may be used, as shown in Fig. 6. The wheel q operates a wheel 2 having twelve teeth. The disc 3 is fixed on the spindle 1 of the wheel 2, and on the same spindle is also fixed a single-toothed wheel 4 gearing with a wheel 5 having twenty teeth and fixed to a spindle carrying the shillings disc 7. The wheel 2 may be raised upon its spindle against the action of a spring 8, whereby it is taken out of gear with the wheel q, when the discs 3, 7 may be turned back again to zero. As an alternative, there may be two sets of figures upon each disc, the upper set indicating the amount consumed, while the lower set indicates the cost. To prevent damage by frost, thin metal diaphragms 9, secured in sockets 10, are provided in the side walls of the meter. The diaphragms deflect to allow for expansion.
