16,560. Stephens, H. Taylor-. July 27. Games imitating draughts.-A game similar to draughts is played with special pieces on a board suitably shaped and divided into squares. The pieces B are constructed, for example, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with corresponding projections and recesses &c., so that they can be superposed. In addition, a number of caps, such as K, Fig. 5, are employed, which can be superposed on the pieces B, but which cannot themselves be covered. According to the method of play described in the Specification, the players use distinctively-coloured pieces, which can only be moved rectilinearly in a direction parallel or perpendicular to the player's base-line, but, to take an opponent's piece, the pieces can be moved diagonally. Instead of 'taking' as in draughts, the taking-piece B is placed over the opponent's piece, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When four or more pieces are superposed, they are crowned by a cap K, Fig. 5, and the piece is termed a ''queen." When a "queen" is moved to the opponent's base-line, it is crowned by a cap similar to the cap K, and is termed a "king," which piece can move in any direction and takes pieces somewhat as in draughts. If a group of less than four pieces reaches the opposing baseline, it is crowned by another cap, and is termed a "duke," which piece moves similarly to the "king," but can only take diagonally. The number and respective powers of the various pieces, and the method of play, may all be varied.
