Abstract

16,128. Webber, B. K. July 20. Casements; draught and weather excluders.-Inwardly-opening windows are made weather-proof by means of a plate 2, Fig. 3, which is hinged at 3, enters a groove 4 in the underside of the casement bottom rail 5, and is overlapped by a plate 9 fixed to the rail 5. When the casement is open, the plate 2 lies upon the bead 7, but, when closed, a stud 10 on the bottom rail 5 holds the plate 2 tightly against the plate 9, so that rain cannot be forced in. The bead 7 is bevelled to carry off any water driven past the hinged plate, or water of condensation which passes through the hole 11 in the bar 5. To reduce draught, the inner edge 12 of the bottom bar 5 is extended so as to fit tightly against the bead 7 when the window is closed. Fig. 9 illustrates a metal casement constructed in a similar manner. Fig. 12 shows a section of a metal casement, capable of swinging inwards or outwards. The casement is supported on hinges having double leaves, and the hinged side of the casement is fitted with a bead 13 fitting into a groove 14 in the adjacent stile. The opposite stile is recessed, and in this recess a metal strip 22, of the section shown, is mounted upon vertical hinges 23. This strip, when in the position shown, has a part projecting beyond the stile of the casement so as to exclude draught, while, when turned back into the position shown in dotted lines, the window may be opened inwards. A similar strip is provided at the bottom of the casement frame. Draught is excluded at the top of the casement by means of a slip of india-rubber fitted into a groove along the edge of the casement, or, as shown in Fig. 13, by means of a metal strip 21, loosely pivoted at its ends and adapted to hang within the groove 25 formed in the top rail of the casement. When the casement is opened in either direction, the strip 24 is moved out of the way within a recess 27. Fig. 17 shows a section of a wooden casement adapted to swing inwards and outwards. The bottom rail is rabbeted so as to fit over the hinged sill 2<a>, and is grooved at 28 to prevent water from creeping in under the casement.
