Abstract
12,797. Leduc, E., and Griffiths, C. June 6. Treating ores.-Calcareous ores, such as calcareous zinc and lead ores, are enriched by dissolving out the lime with a solution of sugar. Poor calcareous calamine, for instance, is calcined until it is free from carbonic anhydride and slaked to hydrate the lime, which is then extracted in a stirring-apparatus with a hot or cold solution of sugar, molasses, &c. The residue contains the zinc. The solution of saccharate of lime is regenerated for re-use by precipitating the lime with carbonic anhydride, which may be that obtained by calcining the ore. Sufficient lime should be left in the solution to prevent fermentation.
