Abstract
10,697. Dillig, G., and Dillig, H. P. May 8, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to means for permitting a differential movement of the wheels in motor vehicles. The rear axle of the vehicle is made in two parts 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 2, each carrying a driving-wheel. A casing formed in two parts 5, 6, connected together by bolts 8, has extensions 9 which fit sleeves 11 loose on the axle, and are provided with nuts 15 engaging collars 14 on the axle, to secure the casing in position. A ratchetwheel 16 is keyed to each section of the axle, and a loose sleeve 17 fits between them as shown. Mounted loosely upon the central part of the casing is a toothed ring 25 forming the sprocketwheel for the driving-chain 24 ; a projection 23 on the ring extends inwards through a recess 28, the two sides 29, 30 of which form stops for the projection. A rod 21 passing through the projection 23 is connected at each end to pawls 20 which are pivoted on a shaft 18 and engage respectively the ratchet-wheels 16. In operation, when the vehicle is moving forwards or backwards in a straight line, the chain 24 causes the projection 23 to engage the face 29 or 30, and the pawls 18 are both tilted equally and engage the ratchet-wheels on each section of the axle, thus driving both axles at the same speed. In turning a curve, the wheel on the inside of the curve requires to rotate slower than the outer wheel; the chain 24 causes the projection 23 to engage one of the faces 29, 30, and the rod 21 then tilts the pawls but allows the inner pawl to bear tightly on the ratchet teeth, while the outer pawl may rise clear of the teeth, thus allowing the outer wheel to rotate quicker than the inner one as required. In a modified arrangement, shown in Fig. 4, the ratchet-wheels 31 have flat teeth, and the pawls 32 are slightly hooked as shown, and are acted upon by springs 35. The spindle 37 upon which the pawls are mounted has a segmental wheel 38 gearing with a pinion 39, which in turn gears with a toothed part 42 formed on the projection 43 of the sprocket-wheel. The action is the same as the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
