Abstract

10,007. Kugel, C. May 2. Annealing -furnaces.-Relates to furnaces for continuously heating, without oxidizing, coils of wire, sheet metal, drawn bushes, or the like, the articles being conveyed on wagons r through a preliminary-heating retort a, a heating-retort b and a cooling-retort c. When the articles are placed in the retort a, the dampers d, e, between the central and the end retorts, are opened, and air is expelled by supplying a vapour or inert gas by the pipes f, g, the valves z in the outlet pipes k, h being kept open until the air has been driven out. The valves z are then closed and the vapour or gas passes through the pipes k<1>, h<1> to water seals, a similar water seal k<11> being also provided for the central retort. To make the heating more uniform, and to protect the dampers d, e from the heat, the ends of the wagons are provided with stacks i of stones or other bad conductors. The wagons are moved through the retorts by means of a rack 1 and pinion 5, hinged flaps on the wagons being arranged to engage recesses on the upper side of the rack. Gases from the grate n circulate through flues around the retorts a, b and escape by the chimney o. After the preliminary heating, the damper d is raised, and the articles are moved into the retort b ; the damper is then lowered and the retort a recharged. The retort c may be cooled by the external air, or it may be fitted with a metal jacket t and a second jacket u, air or liquid for cooling being supplied to, and withdrawn from, the space between the jackets by means of pipes v, w, respectively.
