Abstract

9463. Bryant, W. P. May 12, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Permanent way; rails; sleepers.-Relates to the general construction of the road-beds of railways and more particularly to the rails and sleepers. Fig.3 shows a transverse elevation taken through one of the rails and Fig. 4 a plan showing the method of connecting the longitudinal and transverse sleepers together by means of the combined tie-plate and chair shown in Fig. 5. The rails are formed in two parts 11, 13 which are bolted together at their ends and middle so as to break joint with each other. The outer portion 11 of the rails is formed with the tread 10, and the web portion of this part is made thicker than that of the other part 13. The two web portions fit centrally beneath the tread 10, and the rail is further strengthened by fish-plates 17. When ordinary rails are to be united with the above rails, the flange 14 of the section 13 is removed and the web part 13 forms a fishplate to connect the. two sets of rails. The rails are mounted upon transverse ties 20 which are connected by longitudinal tie-sections 21. The tie-plate 22 is used to connect these two sets of ties or sleepers together and also to form a chair or support for the rails. Channels 26 are formed in the tiesections 21 to allow for drainage, and clips 27 are attached to provide means for the connection of the lifting-bars when "ballasting." The tie-plates 22 and the rails are secured in position by spikes or bolts.
