Abstract

8600. Beeman, J. S. April 14. Mixing cream, paints, &c.-Apparatus for drying, concentrating, mixing, or churning semi-liquid or viscous materials comprises two rotating members, the distance between the surfaces of which is adjusted so that tha coatings of material come in contact and are broken up. At a certain stage of the operation, a curtain of material forms between and below the members, the depth of the curtain increasing as the material becomes more viscous, and breaking up when nearly dry. A suitable form of apparatus is shown in plan in Fig. 2, and a portion in elevation in Fig. 3. The rotating members are two discs D, D' carried by shafts B, F journalled in standards A', A' and A' respectively. They are driven in opposite directions from the shaft C, journalled in standards A<2>, A<3>, by the gearing shown in Fig. 2. The boss D' of the disc D<1> is grooved to receive pins G<1>, carried by a Y-shaped lever G, which at its other end carries a nut engaging a screw held in the standard A<4>, by which means the distance between the discs is adjusted. The material may be fed to the discs through a funnel, or with comparatively thin liquids, such as eggs, the discs may dip in a trough containing the material. The breaking-up and transference of the substance is facilitated by causing the source to move relatively to the discs, as by using a rotating trough. Distributers such as J, J<1> aid in exposing fresh surfaces, and the dried film is removed by a scraper K, turned by a handle K<2> and shaft K' journalled in a standard A<5>, or by adjusting the rotating surfaces to rub off the films. The discs may be exposed, but, for drying &c., they are preferably enclosed in a casing and hot air supplied, or a vacuum effected. The rotating members may have various shapes, have unequal diameters and speeds, and rotate in the same direction. The apparatus may be used for churning cream, mixing materials for paints, &c.
