Abstract

7845. Webster, J. A. April 5. Pencil sharpeners.-A pencil sharpener is provided with a cylindrical cutter, with spiral blades, which rotates on an inclined axis and moves round the pencil. The axis 18 is mounted in bearings 19, 20 bored in discs 9, 10, which are connected by a block 11 and to a hub 7 which rotates in a bearing 6 formed in one side of a casing 5. On one end of the axis, a bevelled pinion 21, preferably of steel, bears against the face of the disc 10, and at the other end is a screw 25 which engages a thread formed inside a bushing 24 in one end of the cylinder 16. On turning the axis by means of a slot 26 formed in the pinion, a bushing 23 in the other end of the cylinder is drawn against a shoulder 26<a> on the axis, which is thereby secured in position.' A pencil-bearing block 14, provided with a conical groove 42, passes through the disc 10, and an extension 43 passes into the hub which is rotated by a handle 15. A screw 44 engages with the extension and on rotation causes the block to be drawn towards, or forced away from, the cutter ; the motion of the screw is limited by a pin 45 which engages with a slot 46. A pin 36 engages with longitudinal slot 47 in the bottom of the block and prevents rotation relative to the cutter. A face-plate 28 is provided with an annular flange 29 in each side of which is a bayonet groove 30, so that on rotating the discs to the right, the friction of the bearing block tends to force pins 31 attached to the casing into the grooves and thereby to fix the plate. On the interior of the face-plate is mounted a brass gearing 32 with which the pinion 21 engages. On the front of the face-plate is a clutch for holding and centering the pencil, and consisting of a plate 33 provided with oblique slots which engage with pins 37 fixed in jaws 39. On pressing down the plate in opposition to a spring 40, the travel of the pins in the slots forces the jaw outward and a pencil may be inserted. A face-plate 49 holds the jaws in position. A box 48, to catch shavings, may be mounted in the bottom of the casing. In operation, the pencil is forced inwards against the cutter which is caused, by means of the pinion and gearing, to rotate on its axis while the discs carry it round the pencil.
