Abstract

7488. Rosenberg, A. March 29. Acetylene lamps. -An acetylene generator comprises a canister adapted to serve primarily as a container, in which carbide or other material may be packed or stored, and provided with an internal arrangement to admit an intermittent supply of water. An independent tubulure attachment is provided to adapt the canister to act as a lamp. The bottom of the canister A is fitted with a perforated tube B which rises centrally and terminates a short distance from the top c; this tube may contain wick or be surrounded by a fabric b, or may itself be formed of porous paper to exert capillary action. The carbide or other material only partly fills the canister, and is prevented from rattling inside the tin by means of a diaphragm F which slides over the tube and is pressed downwards by a spring f. The tubulure attachment comprises a yoke G having four radial arms g, the outer ends of which are adapted to rest on the top of the canister, and hooked extensions h of three of the arms engage beneath a flange C stamped round the edge of the plate c. The arms radiate from a central boss J through which screws a tube K. The outer end of the tube is provided with cross-arms k, or a hand-wheel, and may be closed by a screw plug N' ; the inner end is fitted with a circular cutter L and carries a flange M faced with rubber m. When the hooked extremities L engage beneath the flange, and the tube K is rotated by means of the cross-arms k, the cutter will form a hole in the top-plate c and the flange will be forced down to make a gas-tight joint between the tube K and the canister. The bottom of the canister is then pierced with a needle point, which may be affixed to the screw-plug N within the area of the tube B, and the canister is then immersed in water or other liquid. A flexible tube may be connected to the top of the tube K to conduct the generated gas to any required point. To stop the generation of gas, the canister is lifted out of the liquid and the tube K closed with the plug. In a modification, the canister may be used in combination with a liquid container. In this case, the yoke consists of a closed dome which hooks on to the flanged top of the canister and may be screwed to a flange surrounding the mouth of the liquid container, a rubber washer being provided to make a gas-tight joint. Such a generator may be used to supply the gas for a motor-car lamp, or the top of the tube K may be fitted with a burner so that the whole constitutes a lamp.
