Abstract

5190. Scott, N. L. March 2. Change - boxes. - A plate holder for a camera is described by means o f which rigid plates may be exposed and the n withdrawn from the exposure position into a storage chamber. The apparatus consists of two parts, a protective casing, of which a section is shown in Fig. 6, and a change-box, shown in Fig. 10. As shown in Fig. 6, each plate A<2>, A<3> has fastened at its upper edge a " pro- "pelment band" C<2>, C<3>, terminating in a tab c<2>, c<3>. The front of the casing is open, but the first plate A<1> was initially protected by a dummy plate G to which is also attached a " p r o - "pelment band" H. A rigid partition F separates the casing into two compartments, of which the front compartment contains the plates to be exposed and the other the exposed plates. A pressure board K and spring k keep the plates up tight against the front opening, from which they are removed by pulling the "propelment band." This band passes round the rounded edge E of the board K, and then emerges through a light-tight slit i. A spring flap I normally closes the bottom of the casing, to which may be attached a light-tight bag x, but this is not necessary. The box shown in Fig. 10 consists of two parts hinged at o, and inside the upper part L the casing, containing the plates, is placed. A hinged door M is provided at the back and a sliding shutter l in the front. The lower half 0 is capable of folding back when not in use, and, to prevent entrance of light during this operation, bellows P may be arranged as shown, or a sliding. shutter may be provided across the lower end of the upper part. The object of the lower part or well 0 is to permit the removal of a plate from the front to the back compartment of the casing. In a modification, the lower part 0, instead of folding back on the upper part L, may slide up into it ; a further modification is to dispense with the change-box entirely and attach a bag x to the casing, which may then be used alone. The changebox may be attached to the camera in a horizontal position by means of grooves, the well being formed on the left and the propelment bands being pulled out to the right. Reference is made to Specifications No. 4047, A.D. 1889, and Nos. 6049, 13,926, and 18,899, A.D. 1892.
