Abstract

4918. Carter, J., Hall, G., and Parsons, A. Feb. 29. Conductors.-Relates to automatic circuit-breaking safety-appliances or hanger cut-outs for use in trolley-wire systems of electric traction, and comprises a form of circuit-breaker and also a form of spring contact applicable to all forms of circuitbreakers. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form of hanger cut-out in its normally closed position, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same after the overhead trolley wire d, connected to the part b, has broken. The cut-out consists of two metal arms b, c and the supporting-swivel a into which the ordinary insulating-bolt is secured. The three parts are pivoted upon the stud f, and are insulated from each other and from the stud, where required, by the flanged insulating-bushes g and washers h. The arm b is connected electrically to the arm c by the spring brush contact k which consists cf a series of thin spring metal plates having their free ends bevelled off and bearing upon a corresponding incline on the arm c. When a wire breaks, the corresponding arm moves about the stud f thus breaking the circuit; the stop m, limits the movement of the part affected. The spring brush contact k may be applied to other forms of cut-outs. A modification is shown in which the brush k is replaced by a plain metal surface which contacts with another plain metal surface on the arm c.
