Abstract

4694. Orth, L. von. Feb. 25. Storing under pressure.-To prevent freezing on the rapid discharge of liquid gases from storage vessels, such as that of carbon dioxide for use in extinguishing fires on board ship, the issuing jet of liquid gas is made to impinge upon a tube capable of being heated. The pipe a, connected to the storage vessel, has an oblique or spiral opening g, so that the issuing gas is directed at an angle against the side of the tube b, and flows spirally down through the tube under continual expansion. The pipe b passes through a box, in which water or other liquid heating-medium introduced at d, flows in a serpentine direction over ribs e projecting from the pipe. The ribs serve to direct the current and also to conduct heat to the pipe b.
