Abstract

4377. Newton, H. E., [Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co.]. Feb. 22. Dyes, artificial; amido-oxyanthraquinones and their sulphonic acids ; amido-anthraquinone sulphonic acids.-Relates to the production of alpha1-amido- or alkylamidoa2- oxyanthraquinones and their sulphonic acids by treating a-amido- or alkylamidoanthraquinone or their sulphonic acids with fuming sulphuric acid, sulphuric acid monohydrate, or concentrated sulphuric acid, with or without the addition of boric acid. By heating with fuming sulphuric acid, containing 80 per cent. of SO3, aamido-, alphamethyl amido-, or a-ethylamido anthraquinones, or their #3- sulphonic acids, yield the corresponding alpha2- oxy derivatives. The reaction liquid in each case is diluted with sulphuric acid and poured into ice water to separate the anthraquinone derivatives. When sulphuric acid monohydrate, or ordinary concentrated sulphuric acid, is used, it is better to add boric acid to it. In addition to oxy derivatives, sulphonic acid derivatives may also be formed. Thus amethyl- or ethyl amidoanthraquinone, when heated with fuming sulphuric acid, containing 20 per cent. of SO3, and boric acid, yield probably alpha1- alkylamidoalpha2- oxyanthraquinone-#1 sulphonic acids which dye wool violet shades and chrome-mordanted wool blue shades. alpha1-Methylamidoanthraquinone-alpha3 sulphonic acid, obtainable by the action of methylamine on alpha1-nitroanthraquinone-#3-sulphonic acid, yields the alpha2- oxy derivative when treated similarly. This derivative also dyes wool violet and blue shades.
