3846. Dawson, J. Feb. 16. Inking - rollers, making; impression surfaces &c.- Rollers for calicoprinting &c. machines, are made with a number of layers o f fibres radiating from the central shaft. Upon the strong metal disc or washer c, Fig. 1, abutting against the collar b, are laid fibres of wool, cotton, flax, &c., the central shaft a being held vertical. The fibres extend, approximately radially, from the shaft a or an india-rubber sleeve e to the periphery, as shown in Fig. 2. The sleeve e, which gives the roller resiliency, is divided longitudinally at e' so as to fit against a longitudinal feather f and may be surrounded by a similar sleeve of thin sheet metal. At intervals may be arranged discs or rings g of metal or other suitable material having grooves or corrugations on the two faces, so as to prevent the layers of fibres from turning on the shaft. The rings are slotted at g<111> to engage with the feather f. The discs c, c<1> may be similarly corrugated. Between the rings g may bo placed rings h of india-rubber or the like. The whole of the fibres and rings are pressed together endwise under hydraulic or other pressure, and the disc c' is secured by the nut c<11>.
