Abstract
3087. Johnson, H. M. W. P. Feb. 8. Amalgamating.- Relates to electrolytic c apparatus with a moving electrode for amalgamating metals and alloys. A metal plate a, Fig. 1, provided with bristles or Mexican fibres b, is carried by a hollow shaft c, which is mounted in bearings d, e in a felt-covered handle f. The plate a forms the anode, owing to a spring contact i. The electrolyte passes from a tube n through openings q into the shaft c, which is rotated, as by means of a flexible shaft h, and is thrown outwards by centrifugal action, thereby moistening the fibres b. A spring k keeps the fibres pressed against the surface to be treated, and an india-rubber packing v, w carried by a flange t on the bandle f prevents escape of the electrolyte, the packing engaging the surface to be treated. A gland r and packing s prevents the electrolyte from escaping upwards. In a modification, Fig. 3, for treating curved surfaces, the fibres are replaced by a layer of felt 5, to which the electrolyte penetrates by way of perforations 4. The casing 2 may be of metal, or wholly or partly of ebonite, in which case an auxiliary anode is employed inside the casing. When the plate a, Fig. 1, is of ebonite or the like, a separate anode may be secured inside the casing t.
