Abstract

202. Pennington, R. E. Jan. 4. Locking nuts and washers.-Relates to spring washers used principally for locking nuts on fishbolts for railways and tramways. A hole C to take the bolt is punched or drilled in a curved piece of steel A, Figs. 2 and 3. Saw-cuts E, F are made, the head of the nut extending as far as the cut F, as shown in Fig. 6. As the nut is screwed down, the main part of the washer is pressed down, but the part G, as shown in Fig. 3, prevents the nut from unscrewing. Instead of the part G springing up it may be pressed up by a small block of metal inserted under its end. When the washer cannot be made to bear against a flange, as in Fig. 6, one suitably-cut washer is used for two bolts.
